Car production soars by 65 per cent

Fri, 19 Feb 2010

Car production figures soared by 65% during January 2010, up 64.8% on January 2009 figures. The figure could promise a car finance and motor industry recovery during 2010, as commercial vehicle production also shot up. The statistics were unveiled by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

Nikki Rooke of the SMMT was reported in Sky News as commenting: "It's important to remember that the January figures compare a month when last year many plants were in an extended shutdown. We are expecting a slight dip in the market when we see the end of the scrappage scheme, but we do expect to see moderate growth throughout 2010."

Meanwhile, the business correspondent for Sky, Joel Hills, reportedly commented: "Around a million people are directly and indirectly employed by the car production industry, so we will be watching it very closely in the coming months."
