According to the
Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the
car industry has now hit a critical stage bordering on
emergency. Government action is needed now, the body warned, or the
supply chain and industrial capability of the
industry will be permanently damaged.
The
SMMT are calling for access to
car finance for the
motor finance arms of
car companies, as well as a scrappage scheme to encourage
people to scrap their
old cars and purchase
new cars .
The chief executive of the SMMT, Paul Everitt, reportedly
commented: The UK
motor industry is reaching a state of emergency and the rate of
government action is crucial to the future success of the sector.
Government has an opportunity to support UK manufacturing as a key
global player in the
low carbon future but immediate action is needed to protect the
country’s industrial capability.
The relevant authorities are still in deliberation over how to help
the car industry .
