According to reports in the
car finance news, the government has not consulted the
car industry about the financial aid package announced
yesterday. The details of the package was revealed to the House of
Lords by Lord Mandelson ahead of a meeting with
car companies today.
A spokesperson for the
SMMT was reported as commenting: There’s been no
contact between the government and the
car industry since November, so we’re going to find out
what’s in the package when we watch TV this afternoon. At the
moment, though, we’re also working on the basis that
tomorrow’s meeting will still happen.
A source at
Jaguar was reported as commenting: If we have to allocate
funds to keeping the business going, we can’t also invest
in green technology. Full details of how the government will
respond to the crisis in the
car markets will be revealed during this week. Despite problems
at the
vehicle finance arms of many major companies, specialist
motor finance companies revealed positive figures earlier this
week.
