New car tax will hit drivers

Wed, 02 Jul 2008

Car drivers already affected by rising excise duty could now face increased car tax on vehicles that are deemed environmentally unfirendly by the government. The Conservative Party warned UK motorists about the government plans.

The Tories warned that the changes would hit many low-income families and individuals. The car tax could be applied retrospectively to vehicles purchased at any time since 2001.

Although the Tories are somewhat divided on the issue, for the government policy of taxing polluting vehicles sits with green ethics, the tax oculd be a low blow for hard-hit motorists.

A government official spokesman was reported as commenting: "The government's policy was set out by the chancellor in the budget and that is the government's position. What the government will acknowledge is that we do have to take difficult decisions sometimes if we want to show we are serious about our green agenda."
