car tax could alienate many voters and even turn into a
‘10p tax on wheels.’

The government proposals are for new bands relating to
Co2 emissions, with a different system for older
cars . At this stage, experts are confused over the exact
nature of the new system, and indeed the final structure is not yet
guaranteed not to change.
Experts in the
car market say that a graded system of VED is a good idea for
greener roads and to encourage
fuel-efficient cars . But, at this stage the VED tax is
confusing many consumers. A ‘retrospective’ VED tax
could hit many poorer motorists who cannot afford to change
their cars, experts warned.
