The leading car supermarket group in the UK, Motorpoint, recently conducted a survey that indicates fear of fraud is the major barrier in preventing consumers from buying cars online. Despite this mental block, Motorpoint says that internet sales remains the fastest growing sector of their business.
The general manager of Motorpoint, John Hood, was reported in the car finance news as commenting: "Its the difference between unknown individuals and established organisations. Among the thousands of sellers on the classified ads sites there are going to be some who are not telling the whole truth about what they have on offer."
Hood reportedly continued: "Motorpoint is a sizeable organisation with an established national presence and brand and last year we did more than 25% of our business with internet-enabled customers. They put down deposits with credit cards and dont see their cars until collection day. Of course, honesty is a two-way street, and we rely on people to be up front about the condition of their part exchanges because we dont see them until collection day either."
Car histories at Motorpoint are HPI checked, with live photos and full specs, allowing the consumer to really understand what they are buying. Car finance sales at the supermarket are FSA regulated.
