According to reports in the car finance and motoring news, UK motorists are becoming more and more prone to a clever form of crime, car identity theft. Organised criminal gangs are thought to be generating millions by cloning cars and other related criminal activity.
UK motorists have been warned by mycarcheck.com (UK vehicle data service) that car cloning is a fast-growing area of crime. Some reports estimate the number of cloned cars on UK roads to number 100,000.
The general manager of mycarcheck.com, Roger Powell, reportedly commented: "Car cloning is big business and often the proceeds from such crimes are used by organised gangs to finance drugs deals, human trafficking and even terrorism."
"Often the first victims know their car has been cloned is when they start getting fines for offences they never committed, or when they are involved in an accident. A car may look all right, but if it has been written-off or stolen then insurance companies may not pay out if it is involved in another claim ."
