Car choices divided

Fri, 26 Oct 2007

According to a new study, there is a divide between car finance consumers over which type of engine to choose. The study, which concerned people buying new cars with vehicle finance, indicated that the majority would choose petrol engines.

A survey by the AA found that some 46 per cent of UK consumers would use their car finance buy a petrol car . In contrast, 28 per cent would choose a diesel. However, when it came to used cars, more people chose a diesel over petrol.

Motorists with families were more likely to choose a diesel, with many indicating they would use car finance to make a purchase. Diesel was perceived as a good investment for second-hand cars.

Mark Huggins, the managing director of AA Personal Finance, reportedly commented: "Diesel seems to be king in the second hand market. The swing to petrol for 57 plate cars could create a future supply issue in the second hand market and so used diesel cars may hold their value for longer."
