According to a recent study by uSwitch, as many as 10 per cent of UK drivers could be endangering their vehicle insurance policy by lying to secure a better deal. The false information could invalidate any claims made. Furthermore, uSwitch indicate, as many as six per cent of vehicles in the UK are not even insured.
uSwitch found that common lies include age and address, not to mention where the car is stored. In doing so, policyholders could be invalidating any claim they might make. The findings come despite 75 per cent of car owners being aware that false information could lead to policy invalidation.
Other lies can be about no claims bonuses, and previous driving convictions. The head of uSwitch, Aron Thompson, had the following to say: With many consumers seeing car insurance as a grudge purchase, it's no great surprise to see people either withhold or knowingly provide inaccurate, crucial information in order to get cheaper cover . To the consumer, this may seem like a little white lie to save money . In reality, it could end up teaching the driver a costly lesson, on average £1,636, as the provider is under no obligation to settle a claim based on a policy which is inaccurate.
