Smaller cars more popular

According to recent research by AA Personal Loans, more and more British motorists will choose smaller vehicles in the year coming up, with a 43 per cent increase on figures from 18 months ago.

With the cost of fuel soaring, desire to drive a 4x4 is falling, according to the financial services arm of the breakdown experts. More and more drivers are looking for small, cheap and compact vehicles.

The results were part of the annual AA Deals on Wheels study, which investigates car buying intentions by polling over 2,000 UK motorists . The study found that the super mini is getting more popular and overtaking the traditional purchase group of estate cars .

The number of people seeking a 4X4 vehicles is falling fast, although one peculiar finding is that more Londoners want off-road vehicles than those who live in rural areas in the north of England.

The managing director of AA Personal Loans, Mark Huggins, reportedly commented: "Our research shows that Britons are putting practicality and cost first. The environmental impact, running costs and practicality appear to be growing concerns, although Londoners appear to be bucking the trend despite dealing with more congested roads. About a third of those opting to buy a car in the next year will take out a loan or other finance to fund their purchase. Although interest rates have been rising, the loans market remains competitive and AA Loans are a best-buy. It’s important that buyers spend as much time researching the best finance deal doing the deal on the forecourt."
