Natural Gas cars

According to the manufacturers of the solitary compressed natural gas car in commercial production (the Honda Civic GX) it is the “cleanest internal combustion engine on Earth.” Compressed Natural Gas is apparently cleaner and cheaper, not to mention better for the environment.

Are CNG vehicles widespread?

There are plenty of people driving CNG vehicles in America, but the choice of new cars is limited to just the Civic GX at this stage.

How do CNG cars work?

CNG vehicles store natural gas in a pressurised tank, burning the gas in a modified version of a standard internal combustion engine. Natural gas is 90 per cent methane, and it has a much higher octane rating than gasoline. This leads to greater efficiency, and a much cleaner burning process. CNG cars rival hybrids for the low levels of pollutants and emissions that they discharge.

Are CNG cars really better for the environment?

Yes, although CNG vehicles are generally thought of as having higher greenhouse gas emissions than hybrid cars.

Isn’t CNG used to heat houses, etc?

Yes, in America at least, natural gas is used to generate electricity, for heating and as part of a variety of industrial processes.
