Biodiesel cars

Biodiesel is one of the alternative forms of fuel that can be used in diesel engines. It is, primarily, not made from petroleum and instead is derived from plant oil and animal fat. In America, biodiesel is usually made from soybean oil, whereas in Europe it predominately comes from rapeseed oil. There are alternative ways of manufacturing biodiesel, including recycled cooking oil.

What are the advantages of biodiesel in a green car?

Biodiesel is a completely renewable fuel, with the ability to make more by growing the basic crop. It can be produced on a domestic level, meaning no need for environmentally unfriendly fuel import processes. It also can slash the levels of pollution emitted by diesel engines, and can be used in diesel engines with no modifications.

Biodiesel is already a regulated product, and can be used in pure form or blended with conventional diesel. Blends of between 5 and 20 per cent biodiesel are common, and it is being offered commercially in America.

Could using biodiesel in my car save me money?

Unfortunately, at this stage commercial biodiesel is more expensive than normal diesel, as the product is in its infancy. In some instances, it is matching normal diesel in cost and even becoming cheaper.

Where can I find biodiesel?

Both in the UK and America, finding biodiesel can be tricky. Blending fuels is not usually a problem, so filling up with conventional diesel will not hurt your engine.

Can I make biodiesel myself?

Yes, and without enormous investment either. Waste cooking oil is a good base fuel, although you do need other components that must be bought as well as time to understand the production process. Making biodiesel reuses oil that would otherwise be discarded.

Is it bad for my car?

No, in fact many people who support biodiesel usage find that it wears their engines less. Apparently, those blends that contain a small amount of biodiesel have more lubricity.

What is the legal/tax opinion of biodiesel?

Unfortunately, biodiesel is subject to tax. It is worth checking with Customs and Excise for the most recent situation, but currently the following points are worth considering:

- The fiscal definition of biodiesel is > 96.5% esters - < 50 ppm sulphur
- Current rate of duty is £0.2835 per litre (£0.0313 used other than as road fuel)
- Biodiesel is liable for VAT
- Producers of biodiesel in the UK must register with Customs & Excise and complete form - EX103. Records must be kept, and returns submitted monthly using form HO930.
