New cars: Watch out for these depreciators or lose out
22 Feb 2012
Hydrogen cars are a new breed of vehicles that use hydrogen instead of fossil fuel to power themselves. While the typical car features an internal combustion engine powered by diesel or petrol, hydrogen cars use hydrogen fuel cells.
This technology is relatively new and a number of vehicle manufacturers are currently carrying out research on hydrogen cars and how feasible it is to build them.
Because hydrogen fuel does not occur naturally, it has to be produced and doing this efficiently and in a cost-effective way is one of the issues being explored.
Hydrogen fuel cells are relatively expensive to produce and this is one of the barriers facing hydrogen-powered cars. There is also the issue of infrastructure, which has to be built in order to support these types of vehicles – many of which are only available in concept form.
