Although car buyers are set to face extra taxes, Chancellor Alistair Darling has delayed an increase in fuel duty and highlighted that the taxation system would change to punish the most polluting vehicles.
The following is an overview of the main motoring headlines highlighted in the first Budget by Chancellor Alistair Darling.
Chancellor Alistair Darling postponed April's fuel duty rise of 2p a litre until October. However, he added that fuel duty would increase by 0.5p a litre in ‘real terms’ from 2010.
Mr Darling was forced to admit that any further fuel increase would have an adverse effect on both individuals and businesses.
